ANAISE IS ON!

So happy for Renee and her beautiful new store, Anaise. I compulsively clicked on every category in her shop to make sure I saw every image, and was so taken with her aesthetic and vision. Congratulations, Renee!!

POTENT SHADES

Maybe it’s the scent of spring in the air, but I can’t stop gawking at these grassy green hues. Both pairs are perfect.

A MAINE ROMP

Wish I could correct the lack of posts lately — but truly, I haven’t had a single extended moment to myself since we landed in Portland, Maine earlier this week. This city, it is nothing like how I remember it as a child summering in Maine. It has transformed, and it is astonishing to see. Everywhere you look, world-class restaurants and bakeries and patisseries and chocolatiers, all jammed up against each other. Gourmet markets and organic farms and wine stores and fishmongers. Our time here is limited, so I’m (stupidly) trying to squeeze in as much as possible by scheduling back to back meals — as in, one five-course dinner, followed by another five-course meal. I know. Digestive paralysis, bodily suicide!

For this article that I’m researching, I’ve met with so many warm and wonderful Maine bakers for an article that I’m researching. There will definitely be an entire slew of posts devoted to this mind-bending trip, and I can’t wait to share some of my stories. After a year spent in Portland, Oregon, I was sure I knew which was the superior Portland. Now — not so sure.

2 POINTS

More palms, by California-based Italian sculptor Benny Bufano. [Via an ambitious project collapsing]

And a witchy ring that I would actually wear every day. It uses my three favorite materials: lapis, opal (my birthstone!), and gold. [via Erie Basin]

COMEY SCAPES

I already own the pants, and these tops are just as perfect. I’d like them both, please. It’s like embodying these landscapes, or being the woman in these photos. Beautiful work by Rachel Comey, as usual.

BRIDAL IN RODEBJER

My best friend is getting married this summer, and I’m a maid of honor. Among my other manifold responsibilities (she is totally letting me DJ the afterparty, that is why she is my best friend, because that is seriously one of my all-time dreams, to DJ a wedding, I still can’t believe it), I need to find a dress. The dusky salmon roses of this Rodebjer silk dress might be exactly what I need, though the technical logistics of it (how to wear a bra?) might render it unwearable. Nevertheless, it is divine. (Cheryl, don’t you love it?)

FEELING OUT FUCHSIA

Isn’t it amazing how a week can go from terrible to awesome in a flash? Up until last night, I was having a horrible week, and it felt unsalvageable. But life turned around in a pretty spectacular fashion when we took a trip out to the country to explore Pied de Cochon’s extraordinary Cabane a Sucre (more on that soon!).

So I finally feel compelled to share these shots of my beloved Persian rug, purchased on extreme discount at Ararat’s liquidation sale. (Remember?) We spent almost five hours in the store’s three-story space, meticulously inspecting every single rug, before deciding what to buy (we even took a lunch break at an Indian place across the street to discuss potential purchases!). I’ve never gone rug shopping before, and it was so much fun.

But even at 75% off, the rug was a huge investment for me, and I was initially full of guilt, doubt, and reservations about buying it. Luckily, I have this amazing antique rug-collecting boyfriend who convinced me that this particular specimen was my rug-soulmate. He was right. I love it more and more everyday. I love staring at the strange shapes and patterns, trying to figure out their meaning. I love its vaguely Scandinavian shapes, even though its provenance is 1970s Iran.

It’s currently living in my office and its bright colors make me smile every morning. (The saturated colors, especially the prevalence of fuchsia, is extremely unusual in Persian rugs). My boyfriend bought a rug too, a strange, somber, faded antique Persian rug that’s over 100 years old. Mine is flashier, more “New World.” And while it’s less mysterious and grand, it’s also ineffably me in style. For example, I now notice this exact shade of fuchsia everywhere, like in the slippers that I was wearing the day we rolled out my rug…

Or in this plant that my boyfriend gave me as a gift, chosen for its shade of dusky pink-purple that I apparently love so much.

I even noticed right away that the same shade of fuchsia is found in my favorite floral scarf, which had no choice but to be tucked into the sofa in my office, creating an almost disturbing level of color-coordination.

I mean, it wasn’t until I bought this rug that I realized that even my favorite food is the same freaking color.

FANCY FEAST

Alison nailed it when she noted that she wants these plates to be a part of her fantasy wedding registry. Sometimes, Etsy really pulls through.

TOPOGRAPHY ON TORSO

The current sale at Mociun is so tempting, and this versatile topography Mountains dress is the most potent catnip. It’s been discouraging to see Mociun’s prices steadily creep up over the years; I remember when you could scoop one of her dresses for around $200. But the sales are always decent, especially when the fall collections — always my favorite fashion season — get deeply discounted.

HEARTS OFF

There was some chatter about the questionable sophistication-level of heart-shaped buttons over at P R I M O E Z A, but I have to say that I fall firmly in the pro-heart camp. I love hearts on everything, even if it’s not particularly subtlelike this lovely ring. But wouldn’t it make a sweet Valentine’s Day present?
