HIDING AWAY, BUNDLING UP

Montreal is swaying between fall and winter, and I’m while I’m battling the fierce winds and gauzy skies in truly pathetic winter wear, I secretly love the austerity and calm. Still in need a summer-send off meal, I seared a slab of swordfish steak in the style of my friend Spencer — on extremely high heat, in opaque pools of melted butter, and with excessive amounts of salt and pepper. The trick he picked up in Italy? He ate steaks that were seared plainly and then plopped on a bed of diced parsley marinating in olive oil. I finished this swordfish steak with plenty of lemon wedges and served with a faux-Greek salad — baby arugula, raw diced corn, sliced red onions, crumbled feta, and quartered heirloom tomatoes, topped with diced parsley and a thin red wine vinaigrette.

On another note: I have joined Twitter! My experience at the NEA Institute was, among many other things, one of the most intense, edifying, exciting, and intellectually rich experiences I’ve ever had. One of the most immediate things I came away from the two weeks was the curiosity to check out this thing they call Twitter. I’m still new — so please play nice! — but follow me here, or let me know if you’re on there too. I need my minuscule feed to be slightly more interesting than Huffington Post and Holy Mountain, yikes.

TRIPPING OUT

I hope you guys enjoyed reading Windy’s guest posts as much as I did! I leave this afternoon to begin two weeks with the NEA Arts Journalism Institute in Classical Music and Opera, held at Columbia University in NYC. I’m beyond excited and a little nervous — that I’m about to embark on this experience still feels so deeply surreal. Have been brushing up on my Mahler and Sibelius — did you know that Sibelius is so popular in his native Finland that before they used the Euro his face was pictured on the hundred dollar bill? Pretty incredible. Can’t imagine that kind of mainstream appreciation ever happening here in the States.

A few assorted meals cooked in haste — end of summer kale, oven dried tomatoes and penne tossed together with rigor. Sharp Arcada cheddar sliced onto a halved baguette with strawberry jam-like figs. Roasted chicken breast stuffed with rosemary sprigs, with stewed cannellini beans and roasted red peppers. Quartered beets tossed with parsley and red wine vinegar. (And my little cat, who loves records as much as I do).

Blogging here at Popcorn Plays will likely be a little sparse over the next two weeks. But I am truly looking forward to stuffing my face with Greenpoint pizza and Chinatown dumplings, inspecting the wares at the Mayle pop-up shop, and listening to my friends play at the IPR.

So: any food + drink + experiential recommendations for me? Please please share!

TWO TAKES

My indispensible hetero life mate Alison (of Black and Bleu and Leibrary) is a whiz at Polyvore. I’ve long admired her super chic collages, and she awesomely obliged to make me an inspiration board for my impending move to Montreal. I gave her two keywords – “Russian Spy” – and this is what she came up with. Rachel Comey, Donna Karan, See by Chloe, Ann Demeulemeester – she nailed it. So sick.

POPCORN LOVES UNA + MOCIUN

I love Una of Portland! Many thanks to Ermie for pointing me in the right direction when I first moved to town early this year. It’s a beautifully edited shop with the most stunning pieces; I particularly love her selection of knits + jewelry. I stocked up on last season’s Mociun, including these gorgeous high-waisted silk crepe pants, which are hard to style due to the killer cutout on the backside but totally badass nonetheless. I rarely go shopping these days except for super cheap thrifting but it felt right to get grown-up pants and I don’t regret the splurge for a second!

PRETTY SMART ON MY PART

[Fall RTW photos via Style.com]

I LOVE me a good, busy print, so I am extra enamored of Erdem Moralioglu and his genius fabrics and patterns at his eponymous label, Erdem. For spring 2010 RTW, sweet, vaguely gothy dresses with 3-D minimal techno flowers and muted abstract washes, kinda Dries Van Noten, but way more British and romantic. And for fall RTW, swooping amber sparrows against heavily pleated and tucked grey silk, kinda like those trendy sparrow tattoos circa 1998 but you know what? totally makes it acceptable again.

But the best part of his collection were the watercolor lumberjack boots. God I hope these go into production because they are bananas. After Rachel Comey printed pants and Vena Cava fur and Proenza miniskirts and kneehighs, these boots are top 10 fashion moment of the year for me.

TOUR FOOD: BERLIN

Berlin ruled. Definitely one of the best stops of the tour. We had one full day off here so we were able to wander around and visit museums, galleries, record stores, walk alongside a canal, wander a famed Turkish market, eat Indian food, eat Russian food, eat German chocolate and oh I had my first authentic German schnitzel ever, served with little mound of fried potatoes and scallions and wedges of lemon, so good. Undue thanks to Berlin/Brooklyn resident Crissy for providing me with basically a pitch-perfect list of stuff to do. Oh and Sash perhaps you’ll appreciate the insane vegan borscht I had there? So thick it was practically like a beet puree. Beet baby food. Heaven!

TOUR FOOD: BELGIUM

I took so many photos of food when I went on tour with Benoit Pioulard -  they almost outnumbered the performance-related photos! I admit that it was a little obscene. But our encounters with food were so rich and varied and unique that each meal we had would often become one of the most defining aspects of the city we were in. Brussels was no exception (I already posted about the carrot soup of my dreams! which haunts me weekly), although I have conveniently erased any/all memories of the one disappointing meal I had on tour (super expensive pasta with capers at trendy boutique hotel – do not want).

When I finally gathered the courage to reread my article after it came out, I was truly struck by how much I wrote about the food I ate while on tour. (And shocked that my editor included two photos of food in a journal about experimental music!) Honestly, when I was working on the piece, I think that I had no idea how much food-related babble was seeping in between the cracks of my narrative. These photos are from the day we spent in Brussels, which was truly unlike any place I’ve ever been. Expose-coiled toasters, plastic mats instead of plates, tart homemade blueberry preserves from Sweden, apple-EVERYTHING, and some of the best vegan curries I’ve had, ever. In some ways Brussels was one of the most memorable stops we made, mostly for its infinite unknowability. Truly a strange, magical place.

FALL 2010 RTW: BEST OF THE BEST THUS FAR

My favorites of 2010 fall collections thus far.

Unbelievable perfection at Karen Walker. The socks, textiles, shoes and styling – that jewelry looks like this jewelry! Could it be…?

One of Karen’s best collections yet.

The perfect party skirt at DVF.

The perfect blues and plaids at A Detacher.

The perfect 90s hair at Alexander Wang.

70s-era Joan Didion chic at Boy by Band of Outsiders. Need that fur-collared jacket. (Plus saddle shoes!)

Beautiful, simple sportswear at Shipley & Halmos.

I’ve only ever looked at VPL’s lingerie and bikinis but these are great. Love the muted and metallic olive green palette, so rich and decadent for fall.

The second look by Vena Cava is probably my favorite look of the entire season thus far. The styling, the hem lines, that leather jacket with fur collar which I would trade all earthly possessions to own for one day. I know it’s gauche to be into the fur but this is bizarre, art deco decadence done so right.

Of course, I had to save my favorite designer for last. I almost always prefer Rachel Comey’s spring collections to her fall collections, but this is so light and fresh regardless. My obsession for imaginative textiles are made manifest in these insane printed pants she put out.

Printed pants!!!!!!!!!

Printed!!!!! Pants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Classic Rachel Comey. Twinsets in electric blue, skirts that look like woven baskets. Wanna see that fabric up close. Don’t even get me started on fall’s collection of shoes.

I love the longer hemline on this F Scott Fitzgerald worthy dress although this won’t work on 99% of the population, including me. The print reminds me of my mother’s china.

Cropped velvet pants and dip dyed blouses with black lace overlay. Feels so different from the typical RC insouciance and yet, one of the best looks ever. So wearable too, gotta find those pants…

WE STAND IN THE ATLANTIC + WE BECOME PANORAMIC

i have been staying in so much more lately, enjoying the increasing cozy-level in my apartment, watching many movies and trying in vain to fix my record player. cooking, too. so much cooking. these are the leftovers i ate for lunch today, hovering over my desk and doing a million things at once. pan-fried potato discs that were parboiled for 10 minutes and then loudly fried in a skillet full of butter and rosemary. classy breakfast potatoes.

kale that was torn into tiny tissues of leaves and thrown in a very hot saucepan with (yup, more) butter. the lid was put back on so they could wilt into tiny, chewy ribbons, parts that were charred black and crisp. a few turns of the pepper mill and the juice of half of lemon, and it was one of the tangiest, most satisfying sides i’ve had in a while. it was mixed in with a loose pico de gallo into a black bean/kidney bean mash.

DSCN6667

food of the gods. delicate red lentils are transformed into something extraordinary with the help of tumeric, cumin and cinnamon sticks. a yellow onion, bell pepper, swiss chard and can of pinto beans made this a more bastardized version of daal, but it’s still one of my favorite things to eat on a cold, dreary day.

DSCN6617

comfort food. whole wheat rigatoni with a homemade spicy tomato sauce and chickpeas and parsley. obviously went overload with the cheese but the way it fluttered onto  the mounds of steaming pasta felt like falling snow.

more food photos to come.

// WEEKEND WARRIOR //

joni probably has the softest fur of any cat that i have ever met in my life, no joke. it is hard not to take photos of her every 5 minutes because i love how viscerally sumptuous her fur still looks in 2-d photos. she is as cuddly as she looks, folks. i like her impressive white beard of marshmallow fluff.

DSCN6498

all my damn cat does is sleep all day. tough life.

DSCN6494

she’s so fluffy i like taking these really abstract shots where she is not so ‘cat-like’ and more of an amorphous, fuzzy blob of orange.

DSCN6403

random leftovers hoovered by my mouth at work. red cabbage, squash and wax bean salad with stewed lentils and summer corn, with baguette + hummus.

DSCN6460

cabin fever.

DSCN6412

most people agree that freshly baked bread is one of the best smells in the world. now imagine those smells, multiply it by 50, add 9am, a farmer’s market, and crisp fall air. DOI i totes bought a loaf of brown bread. perfect for sandwiches and random nibbling.

DSCN6415

the shades of honey glowed like rare amber jewels, when lit behind from the early saturday sun.

DSCN6414

i can vouch that the incredibly rich pesto bialys with goat cheese (center) and rivaled only by their sundried tomato counterparts (right). a little too heavy for morning fare, but perfectly chewy with a cup of soup.

DSCN6419

see that bin in the upper left? watermelon radishes!! my first time seeing them in the flesh, so to speak. a delicate, creamy pink palette – truly one of the sweetest vegetables around. i bet they would be lovely braised with a knob of butter and splash of white wine…

DSCN6408

the horse flies, viewed from the streets of trumansburg. i wish this window opened!

happy monday. xo
